Do Online Students Still Take State Tests?

Do online students take state tests? Yes. Students enrolled in online public schools take the exact same state assessments as students in brick-and-mortar buildings, on the same standards and the same schedule. An online public school is still a public school, which means federal law under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and state mandates apply in full. At Gateway Online Academy of Ohio, a tuition-free accredited online school for students in grades 9-12, that means students participate in all required Ohio state testing just as they would at any traditional high school. Students also participate in STAR Reading and Math Assessments twice per year to measure student growth.

For families weighing this question, the key details are straightforward: STAR testing is done in person at a designated site during the state's scheduled testing windows, and students with IEPs or 504 plans receive the same accommodations they are entitled to at any public school. However, families have the option to take state tests remotely or in-person.

Key Takeaways

• Online public school students take the same state tests as students in traditional schools, on the same schedule and to the same standards.
• Federal law (ESSA) requires annual assessments in reading/language arts and math for all public school students in grades 3 through 8. For Gateway students, specifically, this would only affect students in grades 9-12, who must take End of Course Exams in ELA 10, Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, US History, and US Government once they complete these courses.
• Testing is conducted in person at a designated location, typically coordinated by the school.
• Students with IEPs or 504 plans receive full testing accommodations.
• Families do not need to arrange testing on their own; the school provides test-site details, schedules, and preparation support.

Understanding State Testing Requirements for Online Students

Online student state testing is governed by the same federal law that applies to every public school in the country. Under the  , states must administer annual assessments in reading/English language arts and math in grades 3 through 8, as well as End of Course Exams for high school students. Science assessments are required for grades 5 and 8, as well as a required End of Course exam for Biology in high school grades. States must also achieve at least 95% student participation in these assessments.

Because an online public school is a public school, these mandates apply without exception. Enrolling in an online school is what makes participation mandatory, not the type of building a student learns in , that means students take State Tests in ELA and math in grades 3 through 8 and in high school, plus science in grades 5, 8, and high school Biology, US History, and US Government.

Why State Assessments Still Matter

State tests carry real weight, particularly in high school. In Ohio, end-of-course exams factor directly into graduation requirements and help students meet required Graduation Seals. Students who skip required state tests limit their options for meeting graduation benchmarks, a consequence that applies equally whether a student attends school in a building or online. For students pursuing a high school online in Ohio, these exams are not optional milestones to work around; they are part of the path to a diploma.

Beyond graduation, state assessments feed the accountability systems that measure school quality. When participation drops, it affects the school's state report card and the resources available to support students.

State testing can also open doors. In Ohio, for example, all juniors take the ACT free of charge, giving students a college-reportable entrance score at no cost to their family. That single test day can remove a financial barrier to college applications.

How Online Students Complete State Tests

Online learning in Ohio can include remote testing, while some tests, like STAR, require in-person testing. Students at online public schools can take state assessments remotely, or in person at a proctored, school-designated location on assigned testing days. These testing days count as official school days, and students may not use this testing time as offline time. Missing one of these testing days may or may not be counted as an unexcused absence, as students may meet the required hours in other ways. If students do not take all required state tests, they may be withdrawn from the school as required by the state.

At Gateway Online Academy of Ohio, the school coordinates testing sites throughout the state so families can report to a nearby location. Students do not need to arrange their own testing venue. The school provides the site details, the schedule, and the testing day expectations. Because tests are conducted at locations across Ohio, families may need to travel to the nearest available site, but these sites must be no more than 50 miles from the student’s home. The school also communicates those logistics in advance.

Ohio's state tests are computer-based, so students complete their assessments on a device at the testing location rather than on paper. The format will feel familiar to students who already do their coursework online. The testing environment is proctored and standardized, following the same administration procedures used in any traditional school building.

Testing Locations, Dates, and Logistics

for the 2026–27 school year run from April 12 to April 30. The fall window is January 5 to January 15. School models like Gateway may also use an extended window.

Specific testing dates and site assignments are typically published roughly two weeks before the testing window opens, giving families enough time to arrange transportation and adjust their schedules. Students who miss an assigned testing day without an approved reason may receive an unexcused absence if they have not met the required testing hours in other ways, or they may be withdrawn from the school. Makeup days are built into each window, but attending the originally scheduled date is the expectation.

How Schools Help Students Prepare

Test preparation at an online public school is not left to families to figure out. It is built into the instructional model across the school year, well before any testing window opens.

The foundation is standards-aligned instruction delivered by state-licensed teachers through live classes and one-to-one support sessions. At Gateway Online Academy, teachers work directly with students throughout the year on the same Ohio learning standards that state assessments are designed to measure. That ongoing instruction is the primary form of test preparation, not a separate cramming period.

Layered on top of daily instruction, the school runs diagnostic and benchmark assessments periodically throughout the year, as well as readiness assessments and short-cycle assessments to identify where each student stands and where instruction needs to be adjusted. These checkpoints give teachers specific data to target support before the state test arrives rather than after results come back.

Students can also practice with the real thing. Ohio publishes free online practice tests that mirror the format, item types, and platform students will encounter on test day. Because online students already complete coursework on a computer daily, the digital testing environment is already familiar territory rather than an added source of stress.

State Testing Accommodations and Support

Students with disabilities and English learners receive full testing support at an online public school, just as they would at any traditional school. The accommodations a student is entitled to do not change because the school is virtual.

Ohio uses a three-tier accessibility framework for state assessments. Universal tools are available to every student. Designated supports are available based on individual need. Accommodations for students with disabilities must be documented on an Individualized Education Program (IEP), Individual Service Plan (ISP), or 504 plan. These documented supports can include extended time, small-group settings, paper-and-pencil test forms, or other adjustments determined by the student's team. On test day, the school's IEP team makes sure every documented support is in place at the designated testing site. Parents are responsible for transporting their student to that location, but the accommodations themselves are the school's responsibility to provide.

For students whose IEP designates the need for an alternate assessment, Ohio administers its own alternate test, each designed for students with significant cognitive disabilities. English learners participate in WIDA assessments to measure English language proficiency.

Families with questions about what accommodations apply to their student should contact their school counselor or IEP team directly. These conversations are best had well before the testing window, so supports are confirmed and in place with time to spare.

What Parents Should Know Before Testing Season

State testing is a normal part of the school year, and a little advance planning makes the process smooth for the whole family.

State assessments are mandatory and a condition of enrollment at any online public school. This is not something families can opt out of or reschedule around. Testing happens every spring, and the school treats each testing day as an official school day.

Gateway Online Academy publishes exact testing dates and assigned site locations in advance, typically about several weeks or months before the testing window opens. Families should watch for those communications and avoid booking vacations, appointments, or other commitments during testing weeks. If a student is genuinely ill on a testing day, a doctor's note covering the duration of the absence must be submitted to the school's state testing coordinator promptly.

Transportation to the in-person testing site is the family's responsibility, so knowing the assigned location early gives parents time to plan. Families of students with IEPs or 504 plans should confirm that accommodations are documented and current well before the window arrives, so there are no last-minute gaps in support. And students can build confidence ahead of test day by working through Ohio's free online practice tests, which mirror the format and platform they will use.

Gateway's school counselors and student success coaches are available to walk families through the process. No one has to navigate testing season without support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do online students have to take state tests?
Yes. Students enrolled in online public schools are required to take the same state assessments as students in traditional school buildings. Federal law under ESSA mandates annual testing in reading/ELA and math for all public school students in grades 3 through 8, plus science at designated grade levels. High school students, like those at Gateway, must participate in End of Course exams. At Gateway Online Academy of Ohio, state testing is a condition of enrollment, not an optional activity.

Where do online students take state assessments?
Students take state assessments in person at a proctored, school-designated testing site. Gateway Online Academy coordinates testing locations across Ohio and assigns each student to a nearby site. The school publishes the assigned location and schedule approximately two weeks before the testing window opens. Transportation to the site is the family's responsibility, but the school handles all logistics for the testing environment itself.

Are state tests different for virtual students?
No. Online students take the exact same state assessments, covering the same standards and administered during the same testing windows, as students in brick-and-mortar schools. Ohio's State Tests are computer-based, so online students are already familiar with the digital format from their daily coursework.

Can students with accommodations receive testing support?
Yes. Students with IEPs, ISPs, or 504 plans receive all documented testing accommodations at the designated testing site, including supports such as extended time, small-group settings, or alternate test formats. Students whose IEP designates the need for an alternate assessment take Ohio's alternate test. English learners participate in WIDA assessments. Families should confirm that accommodation documentation is current before the testing window and direct questions to their school counselor or IEP team.

How should online students prepare for state testing?
Preparation is built into the school year through standards-aligned instruction from state-licensed teachers and periodic diagnostic assessments like iReady that help target support before the testing window. Students can also practice with Ohio's free online practice tests, which mirror the format, item types, and digital platform used on test day. Because online students already complete coursework on a computer daily, the testing environment is familiar rather than unfamiliar.
